講義概要 This course introduces students to the basic theories, concepts, and concrete issues to understand international relations and world politics. The students will learn not only the conventional understanding of international relations but also new and critical approaches to world politics, paying special attention to the recent effects of globalization on our societies and lives. Special emphasis will be made on the politics of difference, such as indigeneity, gender, and the positionality of Japan in world politics. This class will be conducted in English.

試験・評価方法 Class Participation, Quizzes, and Homework (30%): Assessed on weekly quizzes and quality of response papers. Group Presentation (20%): Assessed on quality of research and presentation. Formal Response Paper 1 (20%): Assessed on quality of summary and critical engagement. In-class Final Exam (30%)

その他特記事項 【学習到達目標】
This course has three main aims: 1. to develop and broaden students’ knowledge and understanding of global issues; 2. to acquaint students with the role of Japan and themselves within world politics; 3. to give students the language skills needed to research global issues in English.

【履修上の注意】
This course requires students’ active participation and collaborative work. Therefore, weekly participation is required. Students are responsible both for attending each class session and for participating in lively and informed discussions and debates. If they miss five classes, they automatically fail the course.

【事前事後学習】
Be curious about what's happening in the world by reading newspapers and watching various news. Also, read the assigned readings by the time indicated for each class. We will have a quiz every week to double-check whether you are reading and understanding the assigned readings.
